Welcome to the Homeschool Octopus Shop—where we’re not just juggling the three R’s (reading, writing, and arithmetic), but also life skills that might just come in handy when you need to fix a wobbly chair or build an epic treehouse! Like most homeschool families, we believe that knowing how to wield a power tool is just as important as acing those spelling tests. Because let’s be real—your kid might forget advanced algebra in a few years, but they’ll never forget how to properly use a soldering iron.
Here at our place, we’ve made it a weekly tradition to break out the toolboxes and power tools and dive into shop class. Safety goggles on, creative problem-solving mode activated, and teaching the differences between a coping saw and a reciprocating saw.
When we first started homeschooling, we searched all over for shop class ideas that we could do and came up empty-tentacled. So we figured, why not create our own? We’ll be sharing some of our favorite DIY projects here, so if you’re looking for fun, simple ways to teach your homeschoolers how to safely operate a belt sanded or a miter saw (with supervision, of course), you’ve come to the right place!
